Keele University’s Chancellor has been appointed to a leading role in the new Government as the minister in charge of the UK’s prisons.
James Timpson OBE, who has served as the University’s Chancellor since 2022, has been appointed by the Prime Minister as the new Minister of State for Prisons, Parole and Probation within the Ministry of Justice.
Mr Timpson will sit in the House of Lords, with the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer saying he was “very pleased” to give Mr Timpson the post in recognition of his extensive work into rehabilitating offenders.
Mr Timpson, who is best known as the Chief Executive of Timpson, is well-known and respected for his leading role in training, mentoring and employing former prisoners. He is also the current chair of the Prison Reform Trust, a position he has held since 2016.
